TMJ Jaw Popping

    For Patients

Are You Hearing a Popping Sound in Your Jaw?

At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Fernando Valley, we specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions related to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, including the common but concerning symptom of jaw popping. If you are experiencing jaw popping, it could be a sign of TMJ disorder (TMD) and may indicate underlying issues with your jaw alignment, muscles, or joints.

    About Jaw Popping & TMJ

Jaw popping refers to a clicking or popping sound that occurs when you open or close your mouth, chew, or speak. This sound may be accompanied by discomfort or pain, though in some cases, patients experience popping without any pain. Jaw popping occurs when the jaw joint shifts out of its normal position or when the soft tissue discs that cushion the joint become displaced. This can happen due to several factors, including overuse, misalignment, or inflammation of the TMJ.

TMJ disorders affect the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. When this joint is out of balance or inflamed, it can cause the cartilage or discs in the jaw to move irregularly, leading to a popping sensation or sound. TMJ disorder can be triggered by stress, teeth grinding (bruxism), arthritis, injury, or poor posture. Left untreated, popping in the jaw may progress to more severe symptoms, such as jaw pain, headaches, neck pain, or limited jaw movement.
