Preparing for Your First TMJ Visit

Contact Us

Welcome to my practice. I am Dr. Farshid Ariz, and if you are reading this, you or someone you love is likely dealing with jaw pain, clicking sounds, or persistent headaches. Living in the beautiful Northridge area, we have plenty of reasons to smile, but chronic pain can make that difficult. Over my years as a cosmetic dentist, I have learned that a truly beautiful smile isn’t just about white teeth; it is about a jaw that functions in harmony with the rest of your face.

Taking the first step toward relief is a big deal. I know that visiting a dental office can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you are dealing with pain. That is why I want to walk you through exactly how to get ready for your first TMJ consultation with me. My goal is to make sure you feel heard, understood, and comfortable from the moment you step through our doors.

Why a Cosmetic Dentist for TMJ?

You might be wondering why you should see a cosmetic dentist for jaw joint issues. It is a great question. In my Northridge office, I focus on the “whole picture.” TMJ disorders (Temporomandibular Joint disorders) often cause teeth grinding, which wears down your enamel. This can make your teeth look short and aged. It can also lead to facial muscles becoming enlarged, giving the face a wider or “square” appearance.

By addressing the root cause of your TMJ issues, I am not just helping you get out of pain; I am helping restore the natural aesthetics of your face and smile. When we balance your bite, we often see an immediate improvement in how you look and feel. It is the intersection of health and beauty.

Understanding Your Symptoms Before You Arrive

Before we ever sit down together, your preparation starts at home. The more information you can share with me during your TMJ consultation, the better I can tailor a treatment plan for you. TMJ is tricky because it mimics other problems. Is it an ear infection? Is it a migraine? Or is it your jaw?

To help us figure this out, I recommend keeping a “Symptom Diary” for about a week before your visit. Here is what I look for:

    • Timing: Do you wake up with pain, or does it get worse as the day goes on?
    • Triggers: Does chewing tough foods like bagels or steak hurt? Does stress at work make your jaw tight?
    • Noises: Do you hear popping, clicking, or grinding sounds when you open or close your mouth?
    • Locking: has your jaw ever gotten stuck open or closed?

Data Point: You Are Not Alone

If you feel like you are the only one dealing with this, let me assure you that you are not. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, estimates suggest that over 10 million Americans are affected by TMJ disorders. It is a widespread issue, but the good news is that it is highly treatable.

    Gathering Your Medical History

When you come to see me in Northridge, I need to know the story of your health. The jaw joint is connected to so many other systems in your body. During our TMJ consultation, I will ask about things that might seem unrelated to your teeth.

    Please be prepared to discuss:

    • Recent Stressors: High stress often leads to clenching your teeth at night (bruxism).
    • Past Injuries: Did you have a sports injury, a car accident, or a fall in the past? Even an injury from years ago can affect your jaw alignment today.
    • Sleep Habits: Do you snore? Do you wake up tired? There is a strong link between sleep apnea and TMJ disorders.
    • Medications: Make a list of everything you take. Some medications can actually increase teeth grinding as a side effect.

The Visual Breakdown: What We Look For

To give you a better idea of what I analyze during your visit, look at the chart below. It compares a healthy jaw function against common signs of TMJ disorder that I often see in patients from Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, and Northridge.

    Healthy Jaw vs. TMJ Dysfunction

    Healthy Range of Motion
    (40mm – 55mm Opening)

    Restricted TMJ Motion
    (< 35mm Opening)

Figure 1: This visual represents the significant reduction in mouth opening ability often seen in patients requiring a TMJ consultation.

What Actually Happens During the Appointment?

Anxiety often comes from the unknown. I want to remove that mystery. When you arrive at my office for your TMJ consultation, the atmosphere is calm and professional. We are not just going to rush you into a chair. We are going to talk first.

    The Conversation

I will sit down with you and review the notes you prepared. I want to hear your story in your own words. Pain is subjective, and how it affects your life matters to me. Does it stop you from eating dinner with your family? Does it ruin your focus at work?

    The Physical Examination

Next, I will gently examine your jaw. I will touch the muscles around your jaw joints, your temples, and your neck. I am checking for tenderness, tightness, and inflammation. I will ask you to open and close your mouth so I can measure your range of motion and listen for those clicks or pops we talked about earlier.

As a cosmetic dentist, I also look at your bite. I check to see if your teeth are meeting together correctly. Sometimes, a single tooth that is hitting too high can throw the entire jaw system out of balance.

    Advanced Imaging

In many cases, I need to see what is happening beneath the surface. We may take digital X-rays or a specialized 3D scan (CBCT). This allows me to see the bone structure of the joint itself. I can see if there is arthritis, bone loss, or if the disc inside the joint has slipped out of place.

The Cosmetic Connection: Protecting Your Smile

I mentioned earlier that I view this through the lens of a cosmetic dentist. Here is why that is critical for you. If you have untreated TMJ, you are likely grinding your teeth. Over time, this makes your teeth look flat and yellow (because the white enamel wears off, exposing the darker dentin underneath).

During your TMJ consultation, I assess the wear on your teeth. If we treat the TMJ but ignore the worn-down teeth, your bite might still be off. Conversely, if you want veneers or a smile makeover but we do not fix the TMJ, you might grind right through your beautiful new porcelain. My goal is to ensure your investment in your smile lasts a lifetime.

    Treatment Options We Might Discuss

Toward the end of your visit, we will discuss solutions. Many patients worry that surgery is the only answer. That is rarely the case! Most of my patients in the Northridge area find relief through non-invasive therapies.

Data Point: High Success with Non-Invasive Care

Research indicates that approximately 50% to 90% of people with TMJ disorders find relief through conservative, non-surgical treatments. This means the odds are very much in your favor that we can fix this without surgery.

Some options we might explore include:

    • Custom Orthotics (Splints): These are not just sports mouthguards. They are precision-made devices that reposition your jaw to its most comfortable, relaxed position.
    • Botox Therapy: As a cosmetic dentist, I am highly trained in facial anatomy. Botox can be used to relax the masseter muscles (the big chewing muscles), which relieves pain and also slims the jawline for a more aesthetic appearance.
    • Bite Adjustment: sometimes, slightly reshaping the biting surfaces of the teeth allows the jaw to settle into a better position.
    • Restorative Dentistry: If your teeth are worn down, building them back up with crowns or veneers can restore your bite and your facial height.

    Questions You Should Ask Me

A TMJ consultation is a two-way street. You should feel empowered to ask me questions. Here are a few good ones to have ready:

    1. “Dr. Ariz, do you think my jaw pain is muscular or joint-related?”
    2. “How will this treatment improve the look of my smile?”
    3. “What changes can I make at home right now to stop the pain?”
    4. “How long will it take before I start feeling better?”

I love when patients ask questions because it shows they are invested in their health. I want you to leave my office with total clarity.

    Logistics: Insurance and Timing

I know the practical side of things matters, too. Before you come in, it is a good idea to call your dental insurance provider. TMJ coverage varies wildly. Some plans cover the consultation and imaging, while others classify it differently. My front desk team in Northridge is expert at navigating these benefits, so do not hesitate to ask us for help.

Also, plan to be with us for about an hour. We do not rush this process. An accurate diagnosis takes time, and I want to ensure we get it right the first time.

Your Journey to a Pain-Free Life

Preparing for your first visit doesn’t have to be stressful. By gathering your history, tracking your symptoms, and coming in with an open mind, you are setting the stage for success. I chose to practice in Northridge because I love this community, and I am passionate about bringing world-class cosmetic and physiological dentistry to my neighbors.

For further reading on how jaw disorders are classified and studied, I recommend looking at this article from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. It provides excellent background information that complements what we will discuss in person.

If you are tired of the clicking, the popping, and the morning headaches, it is time to take action. I am here to help you not only feel better but look better, too. A healthy jaw is the foundation of a dazzling smile. I look forward to meeting you soon and helping you get back to enjoying life to the fullest.
